Scouts in the Dark!
Last week, forty intrepid teenagers skilfully navigated their way
around a 3-mile route in the area of Settle after dusk, all in the
name of Scouting.
On arrival at Castleberg Hall, the Scouts had their kit checked and
were then given a safety briefing before working out their route using
grid references alone. Nine teams of eager youngsters, plus their adult
escort required for safety reasons, then set off at twenty-minute intervals,
soon to leave the security of the street lights to take to the dark
of the fields. Along their route they encountered checkpoints where
they had to complete several testing tasks that were all related to
basic first aid.
Everyone returned successfully and the picture depicts just one of
the Ingleton teams arriving back in triumph having correctly found
their way around the course.
On
their return, the teams snacked on soup and crisps and watched video
footage of Eurojam, the International Camp that was held at Highlands
Park, Essex, this summer as a rehearsal for the Scout Jamboree celebrating
one hundred years of Scouting to be held in 2007. During this time
Norman Dray, District Chairman and organiser of the event, was presented
with a ‘Thank You’ card and gift in appreciation of all
the hard work he had put into making the evening such a success.
Ingleborough District Scouts are most appreciative of the help of
over thirty adult volunteers who gave up their time to register and
brief the entrants, escort the teams, run the checkpoints and organise
refreshments, as without their support the event would not have been
possible.
