Ingleboro’ Explorer off to Poland!
Congratulations to Erin O'Connor from Settle Explorers who has been accepted as one of only 36 Scouts from across North Yorkshire to attend the European Jamboree next year in Poland. This once in a lifetime experience aims to bring together Scouts and Guides from all over Europe to celebrate Scouting and Guiding values, make new friends and strengthen our international community. The concept and the programme will be based on the “Be the Spark” groundwork which has been undertaken over the last four years as part of the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association’s 2023 World Scout Jamboree bid.
To take part, Erin attended a selection event in Thirsk where she had to show that she was worthy of a place by working as part of a team with people she had never met before. Tasks included making promotional videos and feeding the leaders, at which they all excelled.
Erin's next challenge will be to raise funds for the trip so she is hoping for lots of support from local members and sponsors to help her achieve her goal. If you would be willing to sponsor her by way of cash or gifts in kind, please do get in touch.
Exciting New Venue & Date for District Camp
Using a leader’s suggestion, this year the District Team has ambitious plans to change the date of the annual camp from the traditional weekend in July to 26th - 28th April so that the St George’s Day celebrations can be combined with a residential experience. Not only that, but for the first time Cubs, Scouts and Explorers are all being invited, with a day visit for Beavers, too.
After running successful camps at Great Tower in the past, this year Camp George will take place at Waddecar Activity Centre, near Preston. Waddecar has many exciting activities on offer including canoeing, raft building, shooting, climbing, bouldering and orienteering, as well as challenge activities and games suitable for all ages. It also has a bunk house for the Cubs and camping grounds for the older members, so everyone is catered for.
SIESU Fire Lighters
If you need to keep warm, Settle Explorers are the ones to call as they have just learnt the art of fire lighting with flints! Under the expert supervision of Scout Leader, Dan Nelson, the teenagers took a while to convert sparks into flames but eventually achieved success!
Since 2014 The Scout Association has adopted an ambitious strategy enabling the Movement to be shaped by young people working in partnership with adult volunteers. As part of that plan, YouShape month was launched to encourage young people to make more decisions, shape their own programmes and take on leadership roles.
For example, Scouts can plan their own route for a hike, Cubs can show what activities they like best by drawing pizza slices of different sizes or, by voting in a Log Chew, Beavers can help decide what games to play each week. Taking this to a higher level, with time and support, Explorers can organise whole meetings and events for themselves, enrol as Young Leaders to influence the younger sections and become the voice of young people on committees at Group, District, County and National level.
Ingleborough youth members will have plenty of opportunities to take part in similar activities throughout this month.

Ingleton Explorers Discover the Joys of Kingsdale
On a sunny Sunday, three brave Explorers, two leaders and a very excited dog set off to embrace the fresh air and explore the wilds of Kingsdale. As the party wound their way up the Turbary Road, there was much debate about whether they should stop for elevenses. They opted for a quick snack stop before continuing up the fell towards the summit of Gragareth (627m). With good views and a chilly breeze, the group then started their descent and headed for some shelter for lunch. During lunch, the Explorers were treated to a reading from a book covering an 'essential' outdoor activity, while Adam sampled his novel lunch option to decide if it was actually edible. The jury's still out! After a steep descent, the party traipsed back via Jingling and Rowten pots for a quick talk about how deep the holes were! Terrifying! A fantastic effort on a challenging route. Roll on 2019 for bigger and better challenges.
Scouts Help Light Up Ingleton Church
In December, the display of glittering Christmas Trees in St Mary's Church was a new initiative showcasing all the village clubs and activities.
Ingleton Scouts entered a tree decorated with lights and a variety of knots made by the youngsters. Ingleborough District opted for a Scout-themed twig display, bedecked with lights, purple baubles and sectional logos, and very festive they looked, too!
Ingleton Scouts Support the NSPCC
To support the village NSPCC Christmas Story Event Ingleton Scouts organised a café serving hot dogs, drinks, cakes and biscuits. Originally, this should have been an open-air celebration but it was transferred to the warmth of the Community Centre, at the last minute, to escape from the bitterly cold winds and freezing rain! As a result of the wintry conditions, sadly, the footfall was disappointing but the leaders were still pleased to have raised £70 for Group funds and were able to give a small donation to the NSPCC.
Seasonal Fun for Settle Beavers
The run up to Christmas is always a busy time for Scouts of all ages. Settle Beavers took the creative route, making an attractive and decorative Advent Christmas Tree from tissue, paper, tinsel and card, and also enjoyed a visit to meet Santa in Ingleborough Cave.
Settle Explorers have fun, plan ahead and support their community!
In December, the South Ingleborough Explorer Scout Unit completed their first year after re-forming. To celebrate, their final night of the year included glass engraving, some silly games and an eagerness to think ahead to next year's adventures. As a result, plans for climbing, hiking, camping and researching their local economy are underway. It looks like 2019 is going to be a good year for teenagers in Settle!
In the run up to Christmas, the local festivities went ahead despite appalling weather, showing that Scouts are able to cope with anything that is thrown at them. ‘Thrown’ being the appropriate word as the Settle members, headed by the Explorers, ran a stall at the Christmas Lights Switch-On which needed customers with a good aim to knock down ‘snowmen’ with ‘snowballs’! The Group raised £175, a great reward for their efforts under difficult conditions!
